A Letter to My Future Self: There Is Hope

Dear Alexis, You have hit many bumps in the road, have taken the curviest and curvy paths, have turned around & back again, and have even gotten lost. But you are still standing, and you are still alive. That in itself, is amazing. You have been extremely hard on yourself throughout the years and you have got to lighten up. You try your hardest, have done your best, and you constantly try to do the right thing. So be gentle with yourself. You do not give yourself anywhere near enough credit as you should.

Whether you believe it now or not, you will take your life to incredible places you never could have imagined. You will go back to school, and in time, you will graduate with a degree. You will make friends. You will finally live and flourish into the person you always wanted to be, without anything or anyone holding you back. You will do what you love and love what you do. You will help children go through challenging times just like you did. You will give them the support you know they need, and you will do it well. You know what it’s like to be in their shoes, so you are going to be there for them in anyway that you can, just so that they don't feel an ounce of loneliness. You will try to make them laugh and smile just to make their day a little bit brighter. You will get to know them on a personal level and not just look at them as a sick patient; but as a human being. One that is as deserving as anybody else in this world. Through this, you will be the best pediatric nurse you know there is just because of who you are, and how much love and passion your heart carries. You know you will have found your place. The things you thought that mattered, all the worries and fears you have now, won’t matter as much. You will start to thrive in more ways than ever before. One day you will fall in love. You will meet a man. Not just any man, but THE man. The man that makes you feel whole, and the man you feel that you cannot live without. But my hope for you is that you learn to fall in love with yourself before anything else. He can help you fall in love with yourself, but only you can do that fully. Do not make him the priority, because YOU are the real one. You have made everyone else the priority your whole life, and you will one day tell yourself enough is enough and say “I am finally enough.” Why? Because you are, and you always have been my friend. With this being said, I also hope you fall in love with life again. Look for the little things. There is beauty in life everyday. You just have to be brave enough to see it. This will start with you because it has to start with you.

Someday you will be a mother. You will screw up, and not be perfect--but that’s okay. You don’t have to be perfect any longer. You will grow and learn so much as a person as you raise them. This is your chance to embrace your inner child again. You will raise them the way you believe they should be raised, and support them in ways you never were. You will listen when they are looking for an ear, you will be their shoulder when they need one to cry on, you will dry their tears and pick them up when needed, and you will give them advice when they have no idea what else to do. You will guide them through life until one day they can make their own decisions. They will need you, but just in a different way now. However, when you see all the things they can do and will do in their life, you will know a part of that is because of you. But also know that they will see more than you realize and will learn from that, so make sure you set good examples. Do not let them take on your worries and troubles; but instead, reassure them of theirs.

One day you will cook, bake, take pictures, make art, laugh, dance, be silly, and be purely you because you have found yourself again. I mean you will have REALLY found yourself. You will no longer take any day for granted. You will be grateful for everyday you get, and every breath you take. You will realize how strong you are and will never question that any longer for as long as you live. You will realize how beautiful you are. Inside and out. But in time will notice that the only kind of beauty that you should worry about is the one inside of you. And if you solely think about that kind of beauty, you will come to the conclusion that you have been beautiful your whole life. You have the power to effect change, and you have the power to change the world. It may not be the whole world, and that too is okay. But you have the power to change peoples' lives. Literally and figuratively. One at a time. By doing that, you are changing the world. You are changing someone’s world. You have the wonderful gift of bringing joy, love, and laughter to the world. No matter what knocks you down, the light inside of you will always lead you home. So remember, you have tried your hardest, you have done your best, and you are constantly trying to do the right thing. So be gentle with yourself.

From, Your future self

P.S. You have become your own miracle.
